Travel Price Index
MONTHLY INSIGHTS March 12, 2025

The Travel Price Index (TPI) measures the cost of travel away from home in the United States. It is based on the U.S. Department of Labor price data collected for the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI). The TPI is released monthly and is comparable to the CPI.
Our view: The U.S. Travel February 2025 Travel Price Index showed a 0.2% decline in prices for travel related goods and services on a monthly basis. On both a monthly and annual basis, travel prices grew less than overall prices on a seasonally adjusted basis. The TPI increased 1.9% versus February of 2024, compared with an increase of 2.8% for the overall CPI over the same period. In February, airline fares decreased 4.0%, while gas costs continued to decline and were 3.2% below levels of the year prior. Prices for recreation and food and beverage (away from home) were up 0.6% and 0.4% respectively, a little higher than the overall CPI inflation rate of 0.2%, and remain higher on a year-over-year basis as well.
