The Travel Price Index (TPI) measures the cost of travel away from home in the United States. It is based on the U.S. Department of Labor price data collected for the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI). The TPI is released monthly and is comparable to the CPI.

Our view: The U.S. Travel March 2025 Travel Price Index shows that for both the short and long term, prices of travel related goods and services are attractive to consumers and have increased at a slower rate than for the economy overall.  Overall prices and inflation as measured by the CPI moderated to just 2.4% annual growth in March, and price decreases in key travel related items were significant factors. Energy prices fell helping motor fuels decrease 6.2% and airfares fall 5.3%, the second consecutive monthly decrease for both.  Hotel prices also fell 4.3% for the month. That means airfares, gas, and hotels were all less expensive in March than they were at the same time last year. Other travel related categories including food outside the home did experience inflation during the month. Overall, the TPI fell 2.2% on a monthly basis in March, and remained 0.8% below its level one year prior.
